My work consists of on an ongoing investigation into my own body image and complex relationship with food and weight in an attempt to decipher the issue of skewed body image which often results post weight loss. Additionally, I am photographing fast food restaurants in an exploration of how we as a society interact with food, advertisement and their relation to the landscape.
Personal body image and unhealthy relationships with food are something that has troubled me from childhood into adulthood. In 2013, I made a positive change in my life in regards to my diet and exercise habits. Since then, I have come close to having a total loss of 100 pounds (many times) yet for some reason I haven’t allowed myself to reach this final number. My goal with this project is to document my continued weight loss with an objective of losing one hundred pounds in total, and showing others who may be struggling with their weight that it is, in fact, a dual process. Weight loss or gain cannot be simply described as a struggle with food; it can easily be a mental struggle, as well.
My work is influenced both by Jen Davis and Julie Kozerski and their unapologetic, often times raw projection of themselves. Both these women show strength by the intimacy their images portray through the changes made to their bodies because of weight loss.
